Every stump you leave in the ground pulls three things toward your property:
Insects. Termites, carpenter ants and beetles are looking for dead wood at ground level. A stump is a beacon. Once the colony establishes, it walks fifteen or twenty feet in any direction — fence posts, deck framing, siding — and you have a much bigger problem than a stump.
Regrowth. Most Texas trees, especially Live Oak, Post Oak, and Pecan, send up shoots from the root crown for two to five years after the trunk is cut. You mow them, they come back. Grinding kills the crown.
Trip and mow hazard. A stump you've been walking around for six months is invisible to a guest or a kid running. Also invisible to the mower blade the one time you forget it's there — bent shaft, new mower.
Grinding solves all three in one visit.
Stump grinding takes the stump down to 6-12 inches below grade. Removes the trip hazard, the mow hazard, and the surface presence. Roots stay in the ground but decompose over time. Typical Tyler cost: $75-150 per single stump, less each for multiples.
Full stump removal pulls the entire root ball out. Only needed when you want to plant a new tree in the exact same spot, or you're breaking ground for a foundation, driveway or pool. Requires excavation equipment. Typical cost: $300-800 per stump, sometimes more with utility conflicts.
Ninety-plus percent of homeowners want grinding, not removal. If you're not sure which you need, mention it on the form and we'll tell you straight.
Assessment (5-10 minutes). We confirm stump diameter, check for utilities nearby (Texas 811 call if needed for anything close to buried lines), note access — can we get the grinder within twenty feet, or does it have to be walked in.
Grinding (30 minutes to 2 hours). Modern below-ground grinders take stumps down 6-12 inches. Small stumps take half an hour, big Live Oak roots can take a couple of hours.
Wood chips. The stump comes out as chip mulch, mixed with soil. Options: leave the pile for you (useful as free mulch for beds), spread and level with the surrounding grade, or haul away. We spread and level as part of the base price. Haul-away is usually $50-100 extra.
Cleanup and site check. Grinder tracks are noticeable in soft lawn. We rake and hand-tamp the area before leaving.

For anything within a few feet of buried utility lines — yes. We check the location during assessment and flag if it's needed. Usually not required for stumps in the middle of a yard.
Standard grinding only handles the stump itself. Surface roots extending 3-6 feet from the base can be ground separately if they're causing lawn or hardscape issues — extra time, extra cost, mention it on the quote request.
